emma Velde-schaffer
Emma Velde-Schaffer is an Ōtautahi-based painter whose work explores the poetic interplay between abstraction, form, and surface. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury and a Master of Design from the University of Technology, Sydney.
At the heart of her practice lies a sustained engagement with circular forms, which function both symbolic markers and rhythmic anchors.
Layered, tactile surfaces created with glazes, pigments and gold leaf evoke meditative emotional landscapers that have affinities with artist such as Gretchen Albrecht and Helen Frankenthaler.
More recently , her domestic environment has been used as both a reference and an anchor. The internal painterly dynamics of light, colour, and gesture negotiate the shifting broundary between figuration and abstraction.
